Newon custom designed and installed a 4.6 ft diameter round white plain backlit stretch fabric ceiling — a luminous circular disc of ≈16.6 sq ft held on ≈14.5 ft of continuously curved perimeter track — at Manto’s boutique in Giga Boutique Mall, DHA Phase 2 Islamabad. Set inside the store’s designed gypsum ceiling pocket, the disc turns a circular recess into a shadow-free glowing feature above the display floor, using Newon’s 4W LED backlit modules (24V DC, 10 modules/string) laid to the brand’s uniformity rule so no module dot can print through the membrane. Client Brief: What a Mall Boutique Needs From a Ceiling

Manto’s Giga Mall boutique required a ceiling feature that behaves like brand signage — visible, photographic, and consistent with the store’s interior language — while respecting mall realities:

  • A circular luminous feature aligned with the gypsum ceiling design already drawn for the store
  • Shadow-free, dot-free output so fabric colours and prints read true on the display tables below
  • Camera-friendly light for customer content and brand shoots — no visible fixtures, no hotspot rings
  • Installation inside mall working-window constraints, with full protection of finished floors and fixtures
  • A system serviceable later without damaging the gypsum pocket or the membrane

Design Decision: A Luminous Disc Inside a Gypsum Pocket

A round recess in gypsum is usually finished with a ring of downlights — which produces scalloped shadows and visible fixtures. Newon’s alternative turns the entire pocket into light: the curved track is fixed at the pocket rim, the module field is laid across the plenum, and the tensioned white membrane becomes a single glowing oculus. Engineering the Circle: Track, Plenum and Edge Uniformity

Circular stretch ceilings fail at the rim and the edge glow. Newon’s build standard for this disc:

  1. Gypsum pocket verification — pocket diameter, rim level and plenum depth checked against the design before any track fixing; the pocket must be round within tolerance or the membrane tension will show waves.
  2. Continuously curved perimeter track — bent kink-free for the full ≈14.5 ft circumference so tension stays uniform around the disc.
  3. Plenum-depth rule — module spacing set inside the pocket depth so diffusion distance covers spacing; this is what prevents hotspot dots printing through the white plain membrane.
  4. Tightened outer module pass — the ring of modules nearest the track sits closer than the inner field, eliminating the dark border that cheap round backlit ceilings show.
  5. Independent support where needed — module rails and track anchored so fabric tension never loads the gypsum rim.

Installation Sequence (Mall-Window Build)

  1. Survey and pocket check — gypsum pocket diameter and rim level verified against the ceiling design; floor and fixtures protected.

  3. Module laying — 2 strings of 4W modules fixed in a concentric field at calculated spacing; wired to the 24V DC driver.
