Newon designed and installed an 8×20 ft (160 sq ft) white plain backlit stretch fabric ceiling at Shaheen Cosmetics, F-7 Islamabad — a popular retail store where every ceiling line matters for shade matching, photography, and brand presentation. The system uses 250 four-watt LED block modules (25 strings, 1000W total connected load) behind a tensioned plain white membrane, carried on a purpose-built wooden + iron structural frame box so the fabric tension and module weight never load the existing ceiling. The result is a single, shadow-free luminous plane across the sales floor.

Client Brief: What a Cosmetics Store Needs From a Ceiling
In a cosmetics retail environment the ceiling is a working tool, not decoration. Shaheen Cosmetics needed:
- Shadow-free, even illumination so foundation and lipstick shades read true at the counter and in mirror zones
- A camera-friendly ceiling for in-store content and customer selfies — no visible fixtures, no hotspots, no glare rings
- A clean brand-white look consistent with the store’s interior finish
- Installation without disturbing the retail fit-out below, and a system that is serviceable later without destroying the ceiling
System Design: Why Plain White Backlit, and Why 250 Modules
A backlit stretch ceiling turns the entire 160 sq ft plane into one diffuser. Newon’s module count follows a simple uniformity rule: module spacing must not exceed the diffusion distance between modules and membrane, so no bright dot can ever print through the fabric.

Because the existing ceiling could not reliably carry fabric tension or module weight, Newon built an independent structural frame box in wood and iron, anchored to the slab. The box carries the module rails, the perimeter tension track, and all wiring — keeping the stretch system self-supported and the store’s original ceiling untouched.
Build Sequence: Frame Box, Modules, Membrane
- Survey and setting out — levels taken, box dimensions marked at 8×20 ft, floor and display units protected.
- Structural frame box — wooden battens reinforced with iron members, anchored and squared; box depth set so diffusion distance matches module spacing (the anti-hotspot rule).
- Module installation — 250 × 4W block modules fixed in a calculated grid, wired as 25 strings to 24V DC drivers sized with ≥20% headroom per Newon’s power-supply standard.
- Pre-fabric testing — every string energised and inspected for dead modules, polarity, and uniformity before the membrane went up.
- Perimeter track fixing — tension track mounted to the box’s inner lip, levelled on all four sides.
- Membrane tensioning — plain white fabric heated and harpooned into the track for a wrinkle-free, drum-tight finish.
- Commissioning and handover — final uniformity and edge inspection, site cleaned, client walkthrough.



Testing and Commissioning
Each string was burn-tested before tensioning; after the membrane was installed, the ceiling was inspected across the full sales floor for hotspots, dark bands, and edge shadowing — the three failure modes of poorly spaced backlit ceilings. A continuous soak run confirmed stable driver behaviour on Islamabad’s supply conditions before handover.
Energy, Maintenance and After-Sales
At 1000W connected, the ceiling replaces a grid of panels and downlights with one serviceable plane: roughly 12 units per 12-hour trading day, predictable under Pakistan’s commercial tariff (≈PKR 43.83/kWh). For maintenance, the harpoon-edged membrane can be demounted from the track and re-tensioned after module or wiring service — no cutting, no patching. Drivers are grouped at an accessible point, and the membrane itself is wipe-clean and humidity-stable for retail interiors.
