The Design Vision: Reverence Meets Radiance

The Shah Khalid Mosque in Muzaffarabad stands as a spiritual and architectural anchor for the Azad Kashmir capital. When the AJK Government commissioned Newon to design and execute its exterior illumination, the mandate was clear: honour the sacred geometry of the structure while creating a dignified, warm presence visible across the Neelum and Jhelum river confluence.

Newon’s lighting design team approached the project with three governing principles:

  1. Uniformity of Colour Temperature — Every fixture across the entire complex operates at 3000K Warm White, ensuring visual harmony from the dome apex to the ground-level tree uplights. No mixed colour temperatures. No visual confusion.
  2. Layered Illumination Hierarchy — The dome receives the highest luminous priority (visible from 2+ km), followed by minarets (vertical emphasis), facade walls (surface washing), pillars (accent definition), trees (landscape grounding), and corners (edge delineation).
  3. Zero Light Trespass into Prayer Halls — All fixtures are shielded and angled to prevent glare or spill into interior worship spaces, maintaining the sanctity of the mosque environment.

Zone-by-Zone Lighting Breakdown

1. The Dome — Crown Illumination

The mosque’s central dome is the visual anchor of the entire complex. Newon deployed high-output COB spotlights positioned at calculated throw distances to graze the dome surface uniformly from base to finial.

Each minaret is illuminated from base to crescent using narrow-beam LED beam lights that create a continuous column of warm light, drawing the eye skyward.

  • Mounting: Concealed ground-mounted uplights at minaret base

3. Facade Walls — Surface Washing

The main prayer hall facade and assembly hall exterior walls receive linear LED wall washers that paint broad, even washes of warm light across the stone and plaster surfaces.

4. Pillars & Columns — Accent Definition

Structural pillars framing the entrance archways and courtyard are highlighted using COB rope lights housed in aluminium profiles, creating clean vertical lines of light that define each column’s edges.

Mature trees surrounding the mosque courtyard and assembly hall grounds are uplighted using LED tree ring lights and spike-mounted spotlights, creating a warm canopy glow that frames the architecture.

Lighting Control & Automation

The entire Shah Khalid Mosque lighting system is managed through a centralised Distribution Board (DB) with the following automation logic:

Electrical Protection Systems

Given Muzaffarabad’s mountainous terrain, variable grid supply, and exposure to lightning during monsoon season, Newon engineered a multi-layer protection architecture into the DB:

Design Note: All wiring runs from DB to fixtures use weatherproof armoured cable, buried in HDPE conduit underground and in galvanised trunking on exposed walls. Every junction point is IP65-IP67-rated and sealed against Muzaffarabad’s monsoon moisture.


Why Warm White (3000K) for Mosque Lighting?

Newon selected 3000K Warm White as the sole colour temperature for the entire Shah Khalid Mosque project based on three factors:

  1. Spiritual Ambiance — Warm white evokes tranquillity, reverence, and warmth appropriate for a house of worship. Cool white (6000K) would create a clinical, institutional feel inconsistent with the mosque’s purpose.
  2. Architectural Material Rendering — The mosque’s stone, plaster, and tile surfaces reflect warm light more naturally, revealing texture and depth without colour distortion.
  3. Dark-Sky Compliance — Warm white emits less blue-light content, reducing sky glow and light pollution visible from the surrounding Neelum Valley hills.
