Customised profile/rgb strip lighting project in a lesiure club at Movenpick hotel Centauras Islamabad

Customised RGB Profile and LED Pixel Lighting — Leisure Club, Movenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad | Newon Pakistan
Newon Pakistan designed, fabricated, and installed a fully customised RGB LED lighting system for the leisure club at Movenpick Hotel Centaurus, Islamabad — one of Pakistan’s premier five-star hotels. The scope covered 105 custom triangular RGB hanging lights and 120 metres of linear profile RGB lighting suspended from a fabricated MS pipe ceiling frame, controlled via 3 sub Artnet controllers and one main SD music LED controller running Madrix, Madmapper, and Resolume software on a dedicated control laptop. Every element was custom-built, custom-mapped, and custom-wired. This is not a lighting project — it is a complete programmable light environment.
Project Overview: Five-Star Entertainment Lighting at Movenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad
Movenpick Hotel Centaurus is one of Islamabad’s most prestigious addresses — a five-star international hotel operated by the globally recognised Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts brand, part of the Accor Group. Located within The Centaurus complex, it sets the benchmark for hospitality quality in Pakistan’s capital. When the leisure club in the hotel’s basement was being fitted out, the brief was unambiguous: the lighting had to match the standard of the hotel itself — inventive, dynamic, visually spectacular, and technically flawless.
Newon was selected to work alongside the hotel’s design team to develop and deliver a lighting scheme that went well beyond conventional entertainment lighting. The design team’s vision involved using light not just to illuminate the space but to define it architecturally — transforming a raw basement with exposed ducts and bare structural ceiling into a dramatic, atmospherically rich club environment entirely through custom lighting design and fabrication.
The result is a lighting installation that stands as one of Newon’s most technically complex and visually ambitious completed projects — and one of the most sophisticated programmable RGB entertainment lighting systems installed in Pakistan to date. This project also forms part of a wider Movenpick portfolio for Newon, which includes the fibre optic star ceiling above the Movenpick Hotel swimming pool — confirming Newon as a trusted multi-scope lighting partner for this iconic Islamabad property.
“Working at Movenpick was both a privilege and a challenge of the highest order. Every decision — the fixture geometry, the frame engineering, the controller architecture, the software configuration — had to be right first time in a live five-star hotel environment. This project is the fullest expression of what Newon is capable of when the brief demands complete creative and technical commitment.”— Newon Lighting Pakistan
The Design Challenge: Turning a Raw Basement into a Five-Star Leisure Environment
The leisure club is located in the basement of Movenpick Hotel Centaurus — a space characterised by a structural concrete ceiling with exposed mechanical and electrical ducts, service pipes, and the full infrastructure of the hotel above. This is a design environment that presents a fundamental challenge: how do you create a premium nightclub atmosphere when the ceiling is a construction site?
The conventional response — boxing in ducts with plasterboard and installing a false ceiling — was neither practical within the project timeline nor aesthetically aligned with the industrial-chic direction the design team wanted to explore. Instead, Newon and the design team arrived at a solution that was bolder, more inventive, and ultimately more spectacular: use the lighting itself as the ceiling architecture.
The MS Pipe Frame Solution
A structural MS (mild steel) pipe frame was engineered and fixed to the existing concrete ceiling, spanning the full area of the main hall and bar zones. This frame served two simultaneous purposes: it provided the hanging infrastructure for all custom light fixtures at a consistent finished height below the exposed services, and it became the visible structural element of the new ceiling — raw, industrial, and intentional rather than apologetically concealed.
With the frame in place, the lighting fixtures hung below it at a carefully calculated drop height — forming a luminous canopy that drew every eye upward to the spectacle of the lights rather than to the unfinished services above. The bare ceiling became invisible not because it was hidden, but because the lights below it were so compelling that nothing else registered.
This design approach — structural lighting frame as architectural solution — is increasingly used in premium basement hospitality environments globally, from rooftop bars in Dubai to underground clubs in London. Newon delivered it at Movenpick to international standard.
The Main Hall: 105 Custom Triangular RGB Hanging Lights
The centrepiece of the Movenpick leisure club lighting scheme is the main hall — the dancing and bar area — where 105 custom triangular RGB hanging light fixtures were suspended from the MS pipe frame in a precisely planned grid layout documented in detailed shop drawings.
Fixture Construction
Each triangular hanging light was custom fabricated by Newon. The triangular aluminium frame was fitted with full-colour RGB SMD 5050 LED strip along each edge face, facing outward to illuminate the surrounding space, and an acrylic diffuser panel to even the output. Each fixture was connected to the data and power wiring network and assigned its own DMX address within the Artnet universe map, allowing it to be controlled independently or as part of group zone patterns.
The SMD 5050 chip was specified for this application because it carries three separate LED chips within a single 5×5mm package — one each for red, green, and blue — producing the full RGB colour gamut at higher lumen output per metre than smaller chip formats. For an entertainment environment where saturated colour, rapid colour-change response, and high brightness are all required, SMD 5050 RGB is the correct specification.
Shop Drawing and Position Planning
Before a single fixture was installed, Newon produced a comprehensive shop drawing mapping all 105 triangular light positions across the main hall ceiling frame. This document served as the installation guide for the physical hanging positions and as the basis for the DMX address mapping that determined which controller governed which fixture cluster. Precise position planning at the shop drawing stage is essential in a high-fixture-count pixel installation — it eliminates the address conflicts and wiring confusion that would otherwise make the complex control system unworkable.

Bar Area and DJ Counter: 120 Metres of Linear RGB Profile Lighting
In front of the bar area and along the walls beside the DJ counter, Newon installed 120 metres of linear profile RGB lighting — also hung from the MS pipe frame ceiling structure and wall-mounted brackets. The linear profile fixtures followed the same construction logic as the custom fabricated fixtures in the Club Fitness project: aluminium profile body, RGB 5050 LED strip, acrylic diffuser cover — but here extended to continuous 120-metre runs with consistent colour response across their full length.
The bar-facing linear profile lights serve a dual architectural function. When switched to a static warm or neutral white mode, they provide functional task illumination for bar staff — critical for accurate drink preparation and cash handling. When switched to dynamic RGB mode for event and entertainment programming, they become part of the unified colour show, transitioning seamlessly between functional lighting and experiential spectacle as the programming demands.
The DJ counter wall linear profiles follow the same dual-function principle — at low-key settings providing wayfinding and spatial definition, and at full RGB programming intensity becoming a dynamic visual backdrop that synchronises with the music through the SD music LED controller.

The Control System: Artnet Controllers, SD Music LED Controller, and Madrix Software
The most technically demanding aspect of the Movenpick project was the control system architecture — the infrastructure that allows every one of the 105 triangular fixtures and 120 metres of linear profile to be orchestrated as a single, unified, music-synchronised light show. This is where the project moves from impressive to genuinely sophisticated.
DMX512 and the Artnet Protocol
The foundation of the control system is DMX512 — the universal industry-standard lighting control protocol, standardised as ANSI E1.11 by the Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA). DMX512 assigns each controllable channel in a lighting system a unique address from 1 to 512. A standard RGB fixture uses three channels (one each for red, green, blue), meaning a single DMX universe of 512 channels can address up to 170 individual RGB fixtures.
At 105 triangular fixtures plus the linear profile zones, the Movenpick installation requires multiple DMX universes — which is where Artnet becomes essential. Artnet, developed by Artistic Licence and now an open protocol used industry-wide, transmits multiple DMX universes simultaneously over standard ethernet network infrastructure. Rather than running separate physical DMX cables to each universe, a single ethernet network carries all universe data to distributed Artnet nodes (controllers), which decode and output the appropriate DMX signal to their connected fixtures.
The Four-Controller Architecture
Newon installed four controllers to manage the Movenpick installation:
- 3 × Sub Artnet Controllers — distributed across the main hall and bar zones, each responsible for a defined cluster of fixtures within its local DMX universe. This distributed architecture keeps cable runs short and logical, reducing voltage drop risk across the RGB strip connections and making fault-finding straightforward if any zone requires attention.
- 1 × Main SD Music LED Controller — the master hub that receives data from the control laptop and distributes it across all sub-controllers simultaneously. The SD music controller also has a standalone mode that can run pre-programmed show files from an SD card, including music-reactive patterns that respond to audio input — useful for operating the club without a dedicated lighting operator present.

Madrix, Madmapper, and Resolume: The Software Layer
A dedicated laptop connected to the main controller provides the software control interface, configured with three industry-leading platforms:
- Madrix (MADRIX GmbH, Germany) — a professional LED lighting control software platform specifically engineered for pixel-mapped LED installations. Madrix handles the full fixture map of the Movenpick installation, assigns physical positions to every DMX address, and allows operators to programme complex visual effects — colour chases, spatial animations, frequency-reactive patterns, and multi-zone synchronised shows — through a visual programming interface. Madrix is the industry standard for LED pixel control in permanent entertainment installations globally.
- Madmapper — a media mapping and content management platform widely used for combining video content, generative graphics, and LED control in hybrid AV environments. With Madmapper, the Movenpick venue can overlay video-mapped visual content onto the triangular light array — using each fixture as a pixel in a low-resolution but spatially immersive display.
- Resolume Arena — the industry-standard video server and VJ platform used in live music, festival, and nightclub environments globally. Resolume allows the venue’s technical operator to mix visual content in real time, responding to the DJ’s set and the crowd’s energy with live visual programming that is synchronised through the Artnet output to the LED fixtures.
Together, these three software platforms give the Movenpick leisure club a control capability equivalent to the best-equipped entertainment venues in Dubai, London, or Singapore — all operating through Newon’s installed hardware infrastructure in the basement of a five-star hotel in Islamabad.

International Standards and Protocols Behind the Movenpick Lighting System
The technical architecture of the Movenpick leisure club lighting system is built entirely on internationally standardised protocols and platforms. Understanding these standards contextualises the sophistication of what Newon installed — and confirms that the system operates to the same technical specification as entertainment venues in the world’s most demanding hospitality markets.
ANSI E1.11 / DMX512 — The Universal Lighting Language
DMX512, standardised as ANSI E1.11 by the Technical Standards Program of ESTA, has been the universal lighting control standard since the 1980s. Every professional lighting fixture from every manufacturer globally — from Philips and GE to specialist entertainment brands — communicates via DMX512. Specifying a DMX-based system ensures complete forward compatibility: as the Movenpick venue upgrades fixtures or adds new lighting features in the future, any DMX-compatible product can be integrated into the existing control infrastructure without replacing the controller architecture Newon installed.
Artnet — Scaling DMX to Large Installations
For installations requiring more than 512 channels — which the Movenpick project clearly does — Artnet provides the network layer that carries multiple DMX universes simultaneously. The Artnet protocol specification, maintained by Artistic Licence, defines how DMX data is encapsulated in UDP ethernet packets and broadcast across a local area network to Artnet nodes. This is the same protocol used in West End theatre productions, Las Vegas residencies, and festival main-stage lighting rigs worldwide — Newon’s use of it at Movenpick places the installation in the same technical tier as the global entertainment industry.
PLASA and the Professional Entertainment Lighting Industry
The PLASA (Professional Lighting and Sound Association) represents the global entertainment technology industry and publishes technical guidance and standards for entertainment lighting design, installation, and safety. PLASA’s guidelines on data cabling, power distribution, and fixture loading are the reference standard for professional entertainment lighting installations. Newon’s approach at Movenpick — documented shop drawings, structured wiring maps, phased controller architecture, and software-level system testing — aligns with PLASA’s best-practice installation methodology.
For Architects, Interior Designers, and Hospitality Project Teams
If you are designing or specifying lighting for a nightclub, entertainment venue, hotel F&B outlet, or premium leisure facility in Pakistan, the Movenpick project demonstrates the full scope of what a custom programmable RGB lighting system requires in terms of design coordination, technical specification, and installation sequencing.
Integrating Lighting Design with Structural Engineering
The MS pipe frame at Movenpick was not an afterthought — it was a structural element that had to be designed in coordination with the ceiling load capacity of the existing building. Newon’s team worked with the structural requirements of the frame, specifying pipe dimensions, fixing point loads, and hanging fixture weights to ensure the completed ceiling structure was safe and code-compliant. For architects and designers planning similar interventions in existing buildings, early coordination between the lighting designer and structural engineer is essential to avoid costly revisions at installation stage.
DMX Universe Planning at the Design Stage
One of the most overlooked aspects of entertainment lighting design is DMX universe planning — determining how many addressable channels the complete installation requires and how those channels are distributed across the controller network. This planning must happen at the design development stage, not on-site. At Movenpick, Newon’s pre-installation wiring documentation — data wiring maps and power wiring maps — resolved all universe allocation decisions before a single cable was pulled. This is the standard that every professional entertainment lighting installation should meet, and it is the standard Newon brought to this project.
Software Platform Selection for Operational Flexibility
For hospitality venues, the lighting control software must serve two masters: the technical operator who programmes complex show content, and the front-of-house staff who need to run the venue night-to-night without specialist programming knowledge. The Movenpick system addresses this through the SD controller’s standalone mode — pre-programmed shows run automatically without laptop operation — while the full Madrix/Resolume software layer remains available for events, special occasions, and technical show programming. Specifying this dual-mode capability at the design stage ensures the venue can operate both operationally and creatively, without being dependent on technical expertise for routine operation.
For Hospitality and Entertainment Venue Owners in Pakistan
Pakistan’s premium hospitality market — anchored by Islamabad’s five-star hotel corridor and expanding into Lahore and Karachi’s growing luxury F&B scene — is increasingly competing on the basis of experiential quality. A venue’s visual atmosphere is the first and most immediate dimension of that experience. Guests at Movenpick Hotel Centaurus form an impression of the leisure club before they have ordered a drink, before they have heard the music clearly, and before they have engaged with the service team. That impression is formed entirely by what they see when they walk in — and what they see is the lighting.
The ROI of Programmable Lighting in Hospitality
Programmable RGB lighting creates a fundamentally different commercial proposition from static lighting. A venue with static fixed-colour fixtures has one atmosphere — the one that was designed in and cannot change. A venue with a programmable Artnet-controlled RGB system has an effectively unlimited range of atmospheres, switchable in real time by a laptop operator or automatically by pre-programmed show files. The same physical space can feel intimate and amber-lit for a private dinner event, electric and dynamic for a weekend night, and corporate and neutral for a daytime conference — without changing a single fixture. This flexibility directly expands the venue’s commercial calendar and revenue potential.
For Pakistani hospitality operators looking to compete at international standard — whether in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, or internationally through Newon’s UAE operations — programmable entertainment lighting is no longer a luxury differentiator. It is the baseline expectation of a premium venue guest who has experienced comparable environments in Dubai, Istanbul, or London.

Frequently Asked Questions — RGB Nightclub Lighting and DMX Control Systems Pakistan
What is Artnet and how is it used to control nightclub lighting?
Artnet is an ethernet-based protocol that transmits multiple DMX512 lighting control universes simultaneously over standard network infrastructure. In a large venue like the Movenpick leisure club — with 105 individually addressed triangular fixtures and 120 metres of linear profile — a single DMX cable cannot carry enough channel data. Artnet solves this by running all universe data across an ethernet network to distributed sub-controllers, which decode and output the appropriate DMX signal to their local fixture cluster. All 4 controllers at Movenpick operate on this architecture, managed from a single control laptop running Madrix software.
What is the difference between RGB LED strip and addressable RGB LED strip?
Standard RGB strip (SMD 5050 type, used at Movenpick) changes all connected LEDs to the same colour simultaneously — the entire connected run is one controllable zone. Addressable (pixel/SPI) strip assigns each LED or small group its own data address, allowing per-LED independent colour control and animated effects like chasing rainbows and pixel-mapped video. Newon has installed both types — SMD 5050 RGB with Artnet zone control at Movenpick, and SPI addressable pixel strip for the pixel-mapped private party room in Karachi.
What software controls programmable RGB lighting in nightclubs?
The Movenpick installation supports three professional platforms: Madrix (specialist LED pixel control software by MADRIX GmbH), Madmapper (media mapping and content management), and Resolume Arena (live video mixing and VJ software). Madrix handles the full DMX address map and static/dynamic LED programming. Madmapper and Resolume add video content overlay and live mixing capability for events. Together they give the venue operational flexibility from simple ambient programmes through to full live show production.
How can LED lighting cover an exposed duct or bare ceiling in a basement club?
The solution Newon engineered at Movenpick was a suspended MS (mild steel) pipe frame fixed to the structural ceiling, with all custom light fixtures hanging from the frame at a consistent finished height below the exposed services. The frame creates a new visual ceiling plane — the lights form a luminous canopy that draws every eye away from the raw construction above. This approach transforms a structural liability into a dramatic architectural feature, and it is the technique used in premium basement bar and club design in Dubai, London, and Singapore.
What is DMX512 and why is it the standard for entertainment lighting?
DMX512 (ANSI E1.11) is the universal protocol for lighting control in entertainment and architectural applications — every professional fixture from every manufacturer globally communicates via DMX. It assigns each controllable channel a unique address (1–512 per universe), allowing precise, independent control of every light in a system. Newon’s use of DMX/Artnet at Movenpick means the installation is fully forward-compatible: future fixture upgrades or additions from any manufacturer can be integrated without replacing the control architecture.
Can Newon design and install programmable RGB nightclub lighting for venues across Pakistan?
Yes — the Movenpick project represents Newon’s capability at the highest level of the Pakistani market. From initial design and shop drawings, through custom fixture fabrication, MS frame installation, full data and power wiring, multi-universe Artnet controller configuration, and software setup — Newon handles the complete project. We also completed a pixel-mapped entertainment lighting installation in Karachi, confirming national capability. Contact Newon at +92 343 9227883 or info@newon.pk to discuss your venue.
How much does entertainment venue lighting cost in Pakistan?
Cost depends on venue size, fixture count, control system complexity, and the extent of custom fabrication required. The Movenpick installation — 105 custom fabricated fixtures, 120m of linear profile, 4-controller Artnet system, and full documentation — is a high-complexity project. Newon provides tailored quotations for entertainment lighting at any scale, from a single-zone RGB bar counter through to a full multi-universe club installation.
